Pozhichalur is a suburb of Chennai located close to Pallavaram and Pammal. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Agasteeshwarar who is an incarnation of God Shiva. He is found in the Moolasthanam facing East. The Moolasthanam looks captivating when seen from the rear since it has been built in the Gajabrustam style. He Blesses His Devotees along with His Consort Goddess Ananthavalli Ambal. Sri Anandhavalli Ambal is seen in Her South facing Shrine in a standing posture. This Temple is known as Vada Thirunallaru. It is said that on the instructions of God Shiva, Sage Agasthiyar was heading towards the South to balance the Earth. Midway during His journey Sage Agasthiyar is believed to have stopped in Pozhichalur and had Prayed to Sri Agatheeswarar who is seen in the form of a Swayambhu Shiva Lingam in the Sanctum Sanctorum of the Temple. It is believed that Sage Agasthiyar was fond of this place and had stayed in this Temple at Pozhichalur before heading Southwards to the Podigai Hills. It is also said that Sri Saneeswarar Bhagwan made His appearence at this Temple and had Prayed to Sri Agastheeswarar to get Him rid of all the Doshams or Evils. Sri Shani Bhagwan too has a West facing Sub Shrine. There are Sub Shrines for Sri Vinayagar who is seen beneath an Arasa Maram and Sri Anjaneya Swamy.This Temple is one of the Navagraha Sthalam in Chennai or Thondai Mandalam and is dedicated to Sri Saneeswara Bagavan. The Temple was built by the Chola Kings in the 12th Century. Initially this place was called as Pugazh Chola Nallur and now this place is currently called as Pozhichalur. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is Maa Maram or Mango Tree and the Pushkarani or the Sacred Tank of this Temple is known as Sani Theertham. The Temple Tank is located slightly away from the Temple and looks pathetic and needs attention. Many areas around this Temple Tank has been encroched by landgrabbers. Festivals like Mahashivarathri, Karthikai Deepam, Sani Peyarchi, Rahu Kaalam, Pradosams, Arudhra Dharisanam and Guru Peyarchi are celebrated in a grand manner. This Temple is a Sanee, Raahu and Kethu Parihaara Sthalam.
