  • Andalakkum Ayyan Temple, Thiruadhanur, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu

Andalakkum Ayyan Temple is located in Thiruadhanur or Adhanur between River Kaveri and River Kollidam. It is as one among the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Sri Maha Vishnu. Since Goddess Mahalakshmi is considered as a daughter of Bhargava Maharishi this place is considered as a Bhargava Kshethram. The Presiding Deity is known as Sri Andalakkum Ayyan Perumal and His Consort is known as Sri Bhargavi or Sri Kamalavasini Thayar.

This Temple has an East facing three tiered Rajagopuram. There is a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhiya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Garudalwar Sannadhi looking Westwards towards the Moolasthanam. There are two East facing Dwara Baalakas who stand guard before the Moolasthanam. In the Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Andalakkum Ayyan Perumal who is an incarnation of Sri Maha Vishnu is seen in a Bhujanga Sayana Kolam or reclining posture having a Marakaal or a Measuring Jar beneath His head and face turned towards the East. His lower hands holds the Palm Leaves and a Writing Instrument or Ezhuthaani. Sri Brahmma could be seen from His Naabhi Kamalam with Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi sitting beside His Divine Feet. The Urchavamoorthy Idols of Sri Ranganathar or Azhagiya Manavaalan and Sri Ranganayaki are found before the Main Idols. Apart from them the Idols of Shiva, Bhrigu Maharishi, Agni, Kamadhenu with her daughter Nandini, and Thirumangai Alwar with a sword are also seen in the same Sanctum Sanctorum. The Vimanam over the Moolasthanam has been beautifully designed and is known as Pranava Vimaanam. The Thaayar Sri Ranganayaki is in a separate East facing Shrine and She is in a sitting posture exhibiting Abhaya Varada Hastam.

There are Sub Shrines for Sri Narasimhar, Sri Ramar Thiruvadi, and Sudarsanar and Anjaneyar. It is believed that the earlier Chola Kings had built this Temple but later the Pandyas, Vijayanagara Rulers, Hoysalaas and Nayak Rulers had a big hand in developing and promoting this Temple. The Vaahanams of this Temple are stacked in and enclosure. The Temple has a Madapalli or a Temple Kitchen. The Sacred Tank or Pushkarani of this Temple is known as Soorya Theertham. There is a general belief that those having a holy dip here would be cured of all their ailments. Likewise they say that Devotees who visit this Temple would prosper in their Life and there will not be any problems for them for their Food and their house would be filled with Rice and other Provisions. Every year during Ayipasi Tamil Month a ten day Brahmmothsavam festival is performed in a grand manner and people from far flung areas visit this Temple during the festival to get the Blessings of Maha Vishnu.
