Appakkudathan Temple is located in Koviladi and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Koviladi in those days was called as Thirupernagar. It is a Pancha Ranga Kshethram and one among the 108 Divya Desam located on the Banks of River Cauvery. The Temple has a 3 tiered Rajagopuram. This Temple has been constructed on an elevated platform and Devotees may have to climb around 20 steps to reach the Temple premises. Some say that this Temple exists even prior to the Srirangam Temple. It is said that King Ubhamanyu fell into the bad books of Sage Dhurvasa and incurred his curse as a result of which he lost his physical strength. To overcome this, the King was asked to donate free meal or Annandhanam to all his citizens. Strangely an old man who came there gulped the entire preparation and asked the King for more food. Bewildered by the old man the King sought His Blessings. The Old man then asked for one solitary Pot or Kudam of Neyyappam. On consuming this the old man's hunger was fulfilled. Knowing that this old man was none other than Lord Maha Vishnu, the King prostrated before Him and sought His Blessings. After this incident Maha Vishnu or Perumal is known here as Appakudathan. The Moolavar is Appakudathan and the Urchavar is Appala Ranganathar. The Moolavar is seen in Bhujanga Sayanam and West facing. His Consort is known by the names Indira Devi and Kamalavalli. Saints Perialwar, Thirumazhisai Alwar and Thirumangai Alwar have praised the Temple lavishly. As per His name the Lord is seen holding on to a pot in his right hand in this Temple. Appam is the offering or Prasadam made to Lord Appakudathan in this Temple. It is believed that this Temple is more than 1000 years old and the Cholas, Pallavas and the Vijayanagara Rulers had a hand in building this Temple. Since then the Temple has undergone several renovations. Sage Markendeya had a fear for his death and Koviladi was the place were Lord Appakudathan drove away his death fear and therefore the Sacred Tank here is known as Mrithyu Vinasini Theertham. The Sthala Viruksham is a Purusa Tree or a Vilva Maram. Panguni Uthiram, Vaikunda Ekadesi and the Uriadi festivals are famous here. It is believed that any Devotees visiting this Temple will be rid of their sins, ailments, obstacles etc. Since this is one among the few Ranganathar Temple built on the Banks of Cauvery it is called as Pancha Ranga Kshethrams. It is important to note here that this Temple is the only Divya Desam where Neyyappam is offered to the Deity as Neivedhyam and given to the Devotees as Prasadam.
