This Temple is situated in Vellore District close to the banks of River Kosasthalai. Thakkolam in those days was called as Thiruvooral.  It is believed that Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu did Penance and prayed to Lord Shiva, the Almighty.  Lord Shiva the Presiding Deity is known as Jalanatheeswarar and His Consort Goddess Parvathi is called as Giriraja Kannikambal. This Temple is around 1000 to 2000 years old. Original Temple construction was started in 876 AD by the Pallava King Aparajitha Varman. The 3 Tiered  Rajagopuram was built in the year 1543 AD by Vijayanagara King Veera Prathaba Sadasiva Maharayar.  This is the 12th of the Siva Sthalas in Thondai Vala Naadu. There are Shrines for Lord Nataraja, Ayyappan, Ganesh, Murugan, Panchalingams, Navagrahams, Chandikeshwarar, Kaalabhairavar, Naga Devathai, Dhakshinamurthy and others. Dakshinamurthy is unique here since He is found tilted to one side. There is a Flag Mast, Palipeedam and Nandhi. Though a Temple Tank exists, it is in ruins with no care taking.  A well maintained Ghoshala with a dozen cows is seen. It is believed that the colour of the Presiding Deity / Moola Lingam changes with every season. Saint Thirugnana Sambandhar is believed to have visited this Temple and sung in Praise of Him. The Temple is believed to cure the Devotees of all their ailments. Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
