This Temple is located in Vallakottai very close to Sriperumbudur in Kanchipuram District. Vallakottai has almost become a Temple Town now but in ancient times Vallakottai was called as Kottai Nagar, Kottaiyampathi and Kodai Ennum Pathi. It is also said that during those days a Fort or Vallam existed and hence the name Vallakottai. The Temple is nearly 1000 years old and has a 5 tier Rajagopuram built by an ancient King Bageerathan with a lovely Architechture. Some say that a Sage by name Vallaka Maharishi who was a staunch Devotee of Murugan came here and performed Penance and during that time Sri Murugan appeared before the Sage and granted him several boons. As a matter of gratitude Sage Vallaka Maharishi constructed this Temple. A Welcome Arch built on the road leads the Devotees to the Temple. The Temple has a frontal multi pillared Mandapam and beyond this Mandapam is the Rajagopuram which comprises of five tiers and looks elegant to the eyes of the Devotees. At the outset there is a huge Sub Shrine for Sri Ganapathy and it is said that He has to be Prayed first before entering the Temple. There is a West facing Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam, a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram and a Mayil Vaahanam looking towards the Moolasthanam. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Subramaniya Swamy or Sri Murugan. In the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum He is seen flanked by His Consorts valli and Devasena. Though this Temple does not come within the ambit of Arupadai Veedu it is still considered on par with them. There are Sub Shrines for Vijaya Ganapathy, Shanmugar, Sri Devi Karumari Thirupurasundari, Veera Baahu and Idumban. All the Sub Shrines of the Temple looks dazzling and on auspicious days Sri Vallakottai Murugan is flooded with Devotees since Vallakottai is situated close to Chennai. The Temple's Pushkarani or Sacred Tank is situated close to the Temple and is known as Vajra Pushkarani. This is due to the fact that Murugan created this Vajra Theertham using His Divine Weapon Vajrayutham. Thai Poosam, Kanda Shasti, Thiru Karthigai, Aadi Kiruthigai, Panguni Uthiram are some of the festivals that are celebrated in a grand manner.
