The Presiding Deity is Kamakshi Amman, another form of Goddess Parvathi. The Chola Kings started building this Temple in the 14th Century. A major part of the Temple was built by the Pallava Kings. There is an Old and a New Kamakshi Amman Temple. The Temple covers an area of around 5 Acres and has 4 major entrances. Kamakshi Amman is seated in a Majestic Padmasana Yogic Posture. Among other things, the Deity holds a Sugarcane Bow, a Bunch of Flowers and a Parrot perched nearby. The Temple is unique since there are no other Goddess Temples in Kanchipuram. The Sanctum is crowned with a Gold Plated Vimaanam. The Temple's Golden Gopuram gives a dazzling look to the Devotees. There is a Deity of Aadhi Varaaha Perumal is one of the 108 Divya Desam. It is said that King Dasaratha performed Puthra Kameshti Yaagam here for having a child. Interestingly King Dasaratha is from Ikshvahu Vamsam whose Prime Deity is Goddess Kamakshi. Shankara Mutt of Kanchipuram is closely associated with this Temple. The Goddess here is in 3 forms 1) Sri Kamakshi, 2) Sri Bilahasam & 3) Sri Chakram. Here Kamakshi Amman is considered on par with Madurai Meenakshi and Kasi Visalakshi. The Temple ritual starts with the Temple Elephant offering Poojas.
