The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Narashimar and He is an incarnation of Maha Vishnu. The image of Sri Narasimhar is made out by simply scooping out a huge boulder which is quite unimaginable now. This is a Rock Cut Temple and it was built in the 7th century AD by Pallava King Mahendra Varman I of the Pallava Dynasty. The place where the Temple stands now was considered as the second most omportant place in his Kingdom. It should have been obviously a very large city during the tenure of Mahendra Varman. This place was once a Lake and it catered to the needs of more than 15 to 20 villages of those time. This Temple is also known as Mahendra Vishnugriha. The inscriptions states the presence of huge lake called Mahendra Thataka. This Temple is built by carving a huge stand alone bolder. The Dwara Baalakas are found standing on either side of the Sanctum Sanctorum unarmed and in a Tribhanga posture looking at the entrance with both their hands rested on their waist. These sculptures are much eroded and the ornament found worn by one of them ought to be a necklace and it is totally eroded and almost invisible to our eyes now. The artisans of Pallavas in 6th Century excavated a free boulder, scenic monolithic rock cut Temple which is now preserved by Archeological Survey of India. The Eastern phase of this boulder was even out and carved with a Temple consisting three Mandapa. The inscriptions seen today are considered to have been made by splitting the rock then found. Currently this Temple is being administered and maintained by Archaeological Survey of India.
