Sri Panjavarnaswamy Temple is also known as Sri Panchavaneshwarar Temple and it is located in Uraiyur in Trichy. It is one of the Paadal Petra Sthalam built on the Banks of River Cauvery. This Temple was built long ago by the Chola Kings at that time. The Presiding Deity is Sri Panchavneshwarar or Sri Panchavarnaswamy who is a Swayambhu and He is found in the form of a Shiva Lingam. He is East facing and is considered as an incarnation of Lord Shiva and is made of Granite Stone. Facing the Santum Sanctorum of Sri Panchavaneshwarar is a huge and well decorated West facing Nandhi Bhagawan. It is believed that if a Devotee keenly observes the Presiding Deity they could see the Shiva Lingam changing itself into 5 colours every now and then. This is the reason why the Presiding Deity is called as Panchavarnaswamy. Around the Koshtam of the Moolasthanam are the Sub Shrines of Dhakshinmoorthy, Maha Vishnu, Durgai, Brahmma and Chandikeshwarar. Apart from the Moolasthanam this Temple has an Artha Mandabam, Maha Mandabam and few corridors consisting of several carved Pillars. The Consort of Sri Panchavarna Swamy is known here as Kanthimathi Ambal and She is seen in her South facing Shrine. The Temple has various Sub Shrines for Maha Vishnu, Kaala Bhairavar, Soorya Bhagawan, Saneeswaran, Subramanyar, Ganapathi and Mahalakshmi., The Temple also has a Navagraha Sannadhi. This Temple gains more significance since it is believed that it was worshipped by Garuda and Kashyappa Munivar. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is Vilwa Maram and the Pushkarani is known as Shiva Theertham. Pradosham, Maha Shivarathiri, Thiru Karthigai, Panguni Uthiram are some of the festival celebrated in a grand manner. The Temple is kept neat and clean and the Temple Administration has to be appreciated for thier efforts. The Chief Purohit of this Temple is Sivamani Gurukkal.
