The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Lord Sampangi Pitchaaleeswarar who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. He Blesses His Devotees along with His Consort Goddess Sivakamavalli Ambal. This place was initially called as Vamadhevapuram. Here Lord Shiva has five faces namely Isanam, Thatpurusham, Vaamadevam, Sathyojaatham and Agoram. This is one of the five Shiva Temple built on the banks of River Kosasthalaiyar and this represents the five faces of Lord Shiva. It is believed that this Temple is around 2000 years old. It was built facing East and has a three tiered Rajagopuram.  The Nandhi Mandapam is located right before the Sanctum Sanctorum.  This Temple also has a Thirukalyana Mandapam on the right  side of the Rajagopuram. Like other Shiva Temple Ganapathy, Dakshinamoorthy, Vishnu, Brahma and Durga can be seen around the Sanctum Sanctorum. There is a small Peedam where Ambal's Feet can be seen and this is one of the rare aspect of this Temple. This Temple has Sub Shrines for Lord Ganapathy, Ayyappan, Annamalaiyar, Kalahastheeswarar, Raahu, Kethu, Sani Bhagaavan. Pradosham, Maha Shivarathri andVinayakar Chathurthy is celebrated in a  grand manner.
