Sri Chelliyamman Temple, Sogandi, Near Sunguvarchatram, Tamil Nadu

Sri Chelliamman Temple is a village Temple which is located amidst paddy fields, lake, barren ground etc. This Temple is generally not accessed by outsiders. Even locating Sri Chelliamman Temple is an arduous task. The only landmark is it is two or three kilometers away from DAV School, Sandhavelur. Since only a muddy track leads to the Temple, Devotees coming by car could never drive beyond a certain point. The Temple can be accessed only by cycle, two wheelers or by foot.

This is a North facing Temple with a compound wall. There is a North facing Welcome Arch with a grill gate fitted to it. The Moolasthana Mandapam is buit on a multi pillared Mandapam and there is a small coloured Idol of Sri Chelliamman on the Gopuram and She is flanked on either side by Lion Idols. There are two Dwara Baalakis who stand guard before the Moolasthanam of Sri Chelliyamman. On one side of the Dwara Baalagi Idol is an Idol of Sri Vinayagar and on the other side of the Dwara Baalagi Idol is an Idol of Sri Murugan. On the top of the threshold of the Moolasthanam is a coloured Idol of Gajalakshmi. In the North facing Sanctum Sanctorum there is an Idol of the Presiding Deity of Sri Chelliyamman who is seen in a sitting posture. There is a Simha Vaahanam and a Neivedhya Peedam which are South facing and looking towards the Moolasthanam. The Vimanam of the Moolasthanam has various coloured stucco Idols of Gods and Goddesses. Around the Koshtam of the Moolasthanam are the Idols of Iccha Sakthi, Kiriya and Gnana Sakthi. On the outer peripheral of the Temple there is a Viruksham or Tree beneath which is a coloured Idol of Sri Chelliamman and She is seen sitting posture facing North. To the rear of the Temple there is a Sub Shrine of Sapthamathas or Saptha Kannigaigal in which the Idols of Brahmmi, Maheswari, Goumari, Vaishnavi, Vaarahi, Indrani and Chamundi are seen seated North facing. The entire Temple complex seems to be beneath a huge Viruksham / Arasa Maram.

Devotees from places other than Sogandi are requested to visit this Temple in the forenoon of Tamil Aadi Month because generally on all other days this Temple is mostly closed.

Temple Timing: This Temple is closed for most part of the year. It is believed that this Temple would be open only during the forenoon of Tamil Aadi Month or other festive days.
