Sri Kothandaramar Temple is located in Punnainallur on the outskirts of Thanjavur Town. It is said that this Temple was built between 1739 to 1763 by the Marata Ruler Maharaja Pratap Singh. This is an East facing Temple with a five tiered Rajagopuram. Devotees have to climb around 10 to 12 steps to reach the Temple since it has been built elevatedly. Beyond this Rajagopuram is a multi pillared Mandapam on top of which the Idols of Sri Rama, Seetha, Lakshmana and Anjaneyar are seen. There is a Dwajasthambam, a Neivedhya Peedam and a Garudalwar Sannadhi facing the Moolasthanam. In the Maha Mandapam leading to the Moolasthanam there are gorgeously painted Images depicting the Swayamvaram, Ramar Pattabishekam etc. There are two Dwara Baalakas Jayan and Vijayan who stand guard on either side. This Kodanda Ramar Temple is different from other Rama Temples since the Presiding Deity of Kothanda Ramar is made out of Saligramam. In the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Rama is found in a standing posture along with Seetha, Lakshmana and King Sugreeva. The Urchavamoorthy Idols comprising of Rama, Seetha, Lakshmana and Anjaneya Swamy are found within the same Moolasthanam. It is believed that the Urchavamoorthy Idols of Rama, Seetha and Lakshmanar were excavated as Swayambhu from Mother Earth in a nearby village Poovanoor which is close to Needamangalam, around 25 Kms from here. Close to the Sanctum Sanctorum thee is a Sub Shrine for Vishvaksenar. In the outer peripheral there is a Maha Sudharsanar Sannadhi who is North facing and there are two Dwara Baalagaa Idols here. The outer flank of the Temple has multiple pillars and the walls of the corridor here have serial paintings depicted from Ramayana. They look gorgeous in different colours and are eye captivating to the Devotees visiting here. There is a South facing Alwars Sannadhi in the outer peripheral. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is Punnai Maram and a pair of Ramar Paadham is placed before it. The Temple's Vimanam is known as Soundarya Vimanam. The Pushkarani or Sacred Tank of this Temple is known as Ksheera Pushkarani. The outer peripheral has a South facing Sub Shrine for Jaya Veera Amjaneyar who is seen in a standing posture. Another black Anjaneyar Idol is found outside the Sub Shrine of Jayaveera Anjaneyar in a sitting posture. Sri Rama Navami, Hanumath Jayanthi are celebrated in a grand manner. This Temple is situated just a stone throw away from Punnainallur Mariamman Temple. Hence Devotees coming from outstations and other far flung places must make it a point to visit this Temple too.
