Velur is situated on the outskirts of Thanjavur Town. Velur had mutiple names in ancient times such as Parasara Kshethram, Alagapuri, Thanjai Yazhi Nagar, Sameevanam, Garudapuri and Vambulancholai. It is considered one among the 108 Divya Desam Temples dedicated to Maha Vishnu and is built on the Banks of River Vennaru. The Moolavar of this Temple is Sri Neelamega Perumal who is an incarnation of Maha Vishnu and His Consort here is Sri Shengamalavalli Thaayar. The Temple has an East facing three tiered Rajagopuram. There is a Dwajasthambam, a Neivedhya Peedam and a Garudalwar Sannadhi facing the Moolasthanam. In the Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Neelamegha Perumal is in a sitting posture with Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi. His upper two hands holds a Sangu and Chakkaram while His lower two hands shows the Abhaya Hastham and Avahana Hastham posture. Sri Parasara Maharishi is also seen within the same Sanctum Sanctorum. The Urchavamoorthi Vigrahams of this Temple have been moved to a nearby Sri Narasimha Perumal Temple for safety reasons. The Vimanam built over the Moolasthanam is known as Soundarya Vimanam. The Thaayar who is known as Shenbagavalli Thaayar has a separate East facing Shrine. There are Sub Shrines for Alwars, Sri Ramanujar, Sri Desikan and Sri Lakshmi Hayagreevar. This Temple is under the control of Thanjavur Aranmanai Devasthanam.
