Sucheendram is a very important Town in Kanyakumari District. This Temple of Sri Thanumalayan was built in Suchindram. The Temple has a Welcome Arch. The Presiding Deities of this Temple are God Shiva, Maha Vishnu and Sri Brahmma together. This Temple is also known as Sthanumalayan Temple, since "Sthanu" denotes God Shiva, "Mal" denotes Maha Vishnu and Ayan denotes "Sri Brahmma". This place is named as Suchindram since the world Suchi means Purity in Sanskrit. The inscriptions of this Temple showcase that Rulers of all three major Kingdoms of Tamil Nadu namely Cheran, Cholan and Pandiyan worked hard in building this Temple. The Temple is built by following the Kerala and Tamil Nadu Architectural style since this Temple was renovated by the Rulers of Travancore in the 17th century. There is a 22 Feet Hanuman Idol installed in this Temple and it is believed that this Idol was buried beneath the ground when Tippu Sulthan tried to attack and plunder Suchindram. Later this Idol was rediscovered in the year 1930 and brought out. Many Devotees from all parts of India visit This Temple since everyone is Blessed by all the three Gods under a single roof. This Temple also has one of the Biggest Nandhi measuring upto 13 Feet.
There are two Rajagopurams leading to the Temple. The Eastern Rajagopuram is taller of the two and is made up of 11 tiers. The History behind the Temple is that Indran got rid of His curses here. Athreya Maharishi and his wife Anasuya were here. Anusuya was very much devoted to her husband Athreya Munivar and hence Shivan, Maha Vishnu and Brahmma wanted to test Her. They came to Her hermitage as poor Brahmins and sought Alms with a condition that they three would accept her Alms only if she brings its nude. Anusuya agreed to this and with her Divine Power she converted the three Gods as Kids and came to them nude and obliged them. Athiri Munivar who returned to his place came to know of this story and on the behest of Parvathy, Saraswathi and Lakshmi he adviced Anusuya to resotre Shiva, Brahmma and Maha Vishnu to their original form. There are musical pillars carved out of a single stone which is the epitome of Architecture. This Temple gives equal importance to Shaivism and Vaishnavism. Since Suchindram is located closse to Kanyakumari there is a steady inflow of Devotees and Tourists alike.
