Thanjavur was also known as Tanjore during British period and its a great Heritage City. Sri Vada Badrakali Amman Temple which is located in Tanjore is also known as Nisumba Soodhani Amman Temple and it is a matter of pride to know that Sri Nisumba Soodani Amman was greatly revered and Worshipped by the Great Chola Ruler Raja Raja Cholan. This Temple is believed to have built by King Vijayalaya Cholan. The Nisumbha Soodhani Temple is actually located in Poomal Rowther Kovil Street in Keezha Vaasal in Thanjavur. The Presiding Deity of Sri Nisumbha Soodhani is an incarnation of Goddess Sakthi. The Presiding Deity has few other names such as Raahu Kaala Kaali, Vada Bhadra Kaali etc. In the Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Vad Badra Kali Amman or Sri Nisumbha Soodhani Amman is seen in a sitting posture with a partially crushed Demon beneath Her Feet. This means that this Vada Bhadra Kali Amman would crush all evils and evil doers mercilessly. Devotees who actually visit this Temple in person would see the Presiding Deity of Sri Vada Badra Kali Amman's head tilted slightly towards one side. This they say is because She tilts Her Head and Shows more interest in listening to the Woes and Prayers of Her Devotees. The Presiding Deity is huge measuring around 6 Feet with 8 Hands and a ferocious pair of Eyes. This Temple is said to be older than that of the Thanjai Periya Kovil or Brihadeeshwara Temple in Thanjavur. This Temple is also considered as a Kula Deiva Kovil to many of the Devotees residing in and around Thanjavur District. Tuesdays and Fridays are considered very auspicious. It is worth mentioning that the Female Devotees of this Temple outnumber the Male Devotees with ease. The Tamil of Aadi is very important and it draws a great number of Devotees from far and near. It is the habit of Sri Vada Bhadra Kaali Amman to grant Boons to Her Devotees quickly.
