The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Vaikunta Perumal who is none other than Lord Vishnu Himself. His Consort here is known by the name Aanandha Valli Thaayar who is an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. This Temple was initially constructed by the Pallava Kings on an elevated rocky platform in a typical Dravidian style of architecture. Later several additions to this Temple were made by Chola Kings like Paranthaka Cholan, Raja Raja Cholan, Rajendra Cholan and Kulothunga Cholan. The Temple is uniquely built since it does not have any pillars for the roof to rest, instead the roof is directly mounted on the walls of the Temple. It is believed that the original Temple had partially collapsed and was rebuilt in this way by the Cholan King Kulothunga Cholan. The Temple covers an area of about half an acre on the Bazar Road next to the bus stand. The Presiding Deity of Sri Vaikunda Perumal is seated majestically flanked by his consorts Sree Devi and Bhoodevi. A Ganganaa Mandapam is built in one corner of the Temple and this is being used during the festive Brahmothsavam days when the number of Devotees here swell. A Sub Shrine for Sri Anjaneya Swamy and Lord Garudan is seen facing the Sanctum Sanctorum. Likewise there are Sub Shrines for Dhesigar and Vishwaksenar. Late Prime Minister Rajeev Gandhi had visited this Temple and was so impressed with it. Now this Temple is under the custody of the Archaeological Survey of India. This Temple follows the Vadakalai tradition of functioning.
