Sri Vedappar Temple is located on the outskirts of Virudhachalam Town and is also known as Sri Murugan Temple. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Lord Vedappar or Murugan and His Consorts are Valli and Devasena and they occupy the Sanctum Sanctorum of this Temple. Facing the Sanctum Sanctorum is a Peacock Vaahanam and a Bali Peedam placed on an elevated pedestal. One can find a Black Idol of Lord Vinayagar and Saint Sundarar placed just before the Sanctum Sanctorum. Though Vedappar is seen along with His Two Consorts the Swayambhu Idol of Vedappar is placed just beneath the Main Deity in the Sanctum Sanctorum. On the outer wall of the Sanctum Sanctorum several images of Lord Murugan has been painted relating to various stories. Lord Murugan assumes the name of Vedappar due to the following story. Sundarar was an ardent Devotee visiting Lord Shiva in Virudhachalam Town. Later something told him that he would be better benefitted by visiting this Murugan Temple in Poonthottam on the outskirts of Virudhachalam and came here. Fearing that Saint Sundarar would move away from this place Lord Murugan assumed the role of a Brigand or Vedappar and blocked all the outgoing ways of Sundarar and stealthily took over his properties too, so that Saint Sundarar remains with Him here. There is a Sub Shrine for Madurai Veeran Sri Malayala Muthukaruppan and there are two body guards stationed outside. On the left side there is a Sub Shrine for Karuppanna Swamy. The entire Temple complex has several Godly Idols of Horses and Horsemen with Spears and Tridents placed before it. Most of the Horse Idols are kept under the shade of a tinned roofing. There are Sub Shrines for Naga Devathas, Amman and Muneeswaran. Several Tridents seen piercing a lime are kept opposite to these Sub Shrines. On selected days for Lord Murugan they offer Goats and Hen as a sacrificial offering to Him. This is a typical village Temple and villagers residing around this Temple consider Sri Vedappar alias Murugan as their Kula Deivam or Kulasamy and come to this Temple along with their entire family and it is believed that Sri Vedappar never lets down any of His Devotees. Those of the Devotees who come here with specific prayers and wishes tie a few coins in a piece of cloth and hang it on a Divine Tree located at the rear of the Temple.
