Kumaravayalur lies on the outskirts of Trichy Town.   The Temple is located close to the River Uyyakondan a tributary of River Cauvery.  The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Lord Murugan, though the Moolavar is Lord Shiva.  The Murugan Sannidhi lies just behind the Moolavar Sannidhi.  The Temple is believed to have been built  during the Chola period around 1000 years before.   The Temple Tank is called Sakthi Theertham and it is believed that Lord Murugan himself created this Temple tank with His Divine Spear or Velayudham.  Those inflicted with Naga Dhosham take a dip in this Holy Temple Tank to get rid of their obstacles.   This is  the place where Lord Murugan is  said to have blessed Sage Arunagirinathar for singing in praise of Him. Likewise in the present past Late Kirupananda Variar  brought Vayalur to limelight throgh his speeches and writings. The Sthala Viruksham is a Vanni Maram or Vanni Tree.  Vaikasi Visakam, Kanda Shasti, Panguni Uthiram. Thai Poosam etc draws huge crowd during which time special buses are run from Trichy to this Temple.  Devotees tonsure their heads carry milk pots and Kaavadi as their Thanksgiving to Lord Murugan.
