Port Blair is the Capital City of Andaman and Nichobar Islands. Recently the Union Ministry of India has renamed Port Blair as Sri Vijaya Puram. Vetrimalai Murugan Temple is situated in the capital city, Port Blair. Initially to begin with, this Temple was started with Lord Ganapathy as the Presiding Deity. Then on the request of a Tamil Gurukkal to the British it was renamed as Vetrimalai Murugan Temple and started gaining prominence. This Temple was started several years ago in a nearby Ross Island. Then it was shifted to Port Blair now Sri Viajaya Puram. The Temple is called Vetrimalai Murugan Temple and it is a place loved by all Hindu Devotees living in this Island. Likewise Tourists who visit Andaman and Nicobar Islands never fail to visit Sri Vijaya Puram which was formerly known as Port Blair. The Presiding Deity of this Vetrimalai Murugan Temple is Lord Murugan who is otherwise known as Karthikeyan or Subramaniyar or Shanmughanathar. Apart from the Main Shrine there are Sub Shrine for other Gods and Goddess like Shiva, Parvathi and Ganapathy. The Temple's Archtecture is typically that of South Indian and many Purohits working here are well versed in Tamil and a few other Indian Languages. The Gopuram of this Temple has been built in an exceptional manner with intricate carvings embossed on them which captivates the eyes of any onlookers visiting this Temple. All the pillars of the multi pillared Mandapam have been gorgeously painted in different colours making it look spectacular. Even the ceiling of the Temple has vaious designs of different colours. Many South Indian Devotees especially those visiting here from Tamil Nadu feel that this Vetrimalai Murugan Temple of Sri Vijaya Puram is similar to that of Kandha Kottam Temple in Chennai. The Temple authorities maintain this Temple very well. Similarly the Nandavanam or Temple Garden located in the outer peripheral is maintained well too. Thai Poosam, Kanda Shasti, Aadi Kiruthigai are some of the functions celebrated in a grand manner. There is another Murugan Temple nearby which attracts a lot of visitors coming here. This is situated in Car Nicobar Island and is well known as the Malaka Murugan Temple.
