Golden Temple, Amritsar, Punjab

The Golden Temple is also known as Darbar Sahib or Harmandir Sahib which means Abode of God in Punjabi. This Temple is one of the prominent Spiritual site of Sikhism. The Gurudwara is built around a man-made pool named Sarovar which was completed by the fourth Sikh Guru, Ram Das in 1577. Guru Arjin the Fifth Guru of Sikhism requested Sai Mir Mian Mohammed a Muslim Pir of Lahore to lay its foundation stone in the year 1589. In the year 1604 Guru Arjin placed a copy of the Adi Granth in this Harmandir Sahib. This Harmandir Sahib was plundered and destroyed many times by Mughal and Afghan Armies. The founder of the Sikh Empire Maharaj Ranjith Singh rebuilt this Temple using Marble and Copper in the year 1809 and he covered the Sanctum Sanctorum using gold foil in the year 1830. This Temple is open to people from all walks of life. There are four entrances and the Temple has a circumambulation path around the pool. This Temple is a collection of buildings around the pool and one of these is the Akal Takht, the chief center of religious authority of Sikhism. There is a free Sikh community run kitchen called Lunger which serves a simple vegetarian meal to all visitors. Everyday nearly one lakh people visit this Temple.
