Mahabodhi Temple or Mahavihara Temple, Bodh Gaya, Bihar

Mahabodhi Temple Bodhi Mandir means Great Awakening Temple.  It is also known as Mahavihara Temple.  This Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The original Temple was built by the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka The Great.  The Site contains a descendant of the Bodhi Tree under which Buddha gained enlightenment.  Later Buddha meditated 7 succeeding weeks in and around this place. The original Temple was later replaced and  is now one of the Oldest Brick Temples in India.  The Temple is 55 meters high & has 4 identical towers.  A yellow sandstone statue of Buddha encased in glass is kept in a Shrine here.  The 11.9 Acre Temple Complex has several Ancient Shrines and Modern Structures built in recent years by the Devotees.  Most Originals of the Temple are preserved in a nearby Temple Museum.  The exact place where Buddha traditionally sat is called Vajrasana.  Some traditionalists say that the Navel of the Earth lies here. Apart from Buddhists, Hindus too throng here due to its Historical importance.  Though its a brick Temple carved with stucco materials it has withstood the Vagaries of Nature very well till this day.
