St.George Syro-Malabar Catholic Forane Church, Edappally, Kochi, Kerala

St. George's Syro Malabar Forane Church is also called as Edapally Church. This Church is built for Roman Catholic Christians living around Edapally. Initially this Church was dedicated to Marth Mariam or Virgin Mary and was built in the year 593 AD. This Church is one of the 7 Churches that was built by Juses Christ's seventh Apostle St.Thomas. It is one of the biggest Church in India as well as in the whole of Asia. Initially this Church complex was too small but in the year 1080 a new Church complex was constructed adjacent the Old Church in order to accommodate more Worshippers. Currently the Old Church complex is preserved and used as a store room. The foundation stone for third Church Complex was blessed by Pope John Paul II and laid on 1 January 2001. This Church is built by blending both European and Keralite style of architecture. This Octoganal Church complex is 141-foot-high and is built on a whopping 88,000 Sq. ft of land. In 18 January 1994 Mother Teresa visited from Calcutta, to commemorate the occasion a bell tower was constructed and a bell was installed inside the Church Complex. The Main Altar or Madbaha is made out of teak wood and is covered with gold foil imported from Italy which also has two bell towers. Every year St.George's Day on 23rd April is celebrated in a grand manner for 9 consecutive days.
