St. Teresa's Shrine, Mahe, Pondicherry in Kerala

St. Theresa Shrine is one of the oldest and most visited Shrines in India.  This is a Roman Catholic Church.  This Church is in Mahe which is located in Kerala State but the official Government of Mahe comes under Pondicherry.   This Shrine was built in the year 1736 by Father Ignatius.   History tells us that  Italian Father Dominic of St. John  came to Mahe and established the Mahe Mission in the year 1723 during the Reign of Bayanor who was the King of Kadathanad near Vatakara.  A small Christian community was formed then and lived in this place and this Shrine was dedicated to  Father Dominic of St. John Cross.  Initially the Church  had a thatched complex and it was renovated many times after this.  This Church faced many damages and destruction due to the Anglo French Rivalry.   It was Abbe Duchenin who renovated this Church and brought it back to it's current structure.  In the year 1956  St.Theresa's Nursery, Primary School, Parish Hall and a New Presbytery  were added.   The Feast of the Shrine is one of the important event of this Church which is held every october.  This Feast is considered as the Festival of Mahe and people from different parts of Kerala, Pondicherry and France visit this Church during thsi Mahe Festival.
