Perungalur in ancient times was full of Mullai Trees and it was called as Mullai Vanam. This Temple is located in Perungalur Village in Pudukkottai District. This is a West facing Temple. The Presiding Deity here is Lord Vamsodharakar who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. His Consort here is called as Goddess Mangalambigai. Like all Shiva Temples this Temple has a Kodimaram or a Flag Staff, Neivedhya Peedam and a Nandhi Vaahanam. Basically it is believed that Lord Vamsodharakar Blesses any childless couple so that their generation goes on uninterruptedly. This Temple dates back to the days of King Kulothunga Cholan. The Temple is rickety and is not so well maintained. The Shivalingam in Perungalur Temple faces West. A Vannimara Pillayar is seated beneath the Tree close to the Pond and next to it are the Idols of Ayyanar and Naga Devathas. The Pond or Temple Tank is slushy and garbage filled too. Some help towards cleaning from the local villagers would show the Temple in a better way. Few Temple Priests are available for the visiting Devotees.
