The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Mariamman who is an incarnation of The Supreme Mother Goddess Durga or Maha Kali or Aadhi Sakthi. The Presiding Deity is also called as Samayapurathal by localites. The Idol of Mariamman is made out of clay because of which no Abhishekam are perfromed to Her. Instead a small stone Idol is installed in the front of the Presiding Deity to perform such Abhishekams. It is believed that all Physical Ailments of Devotees visiting this Temple are cured because of which Devotees who visit this Temple bring small metallic replicas of Body Parts made out silver that need to be cured and these replicas are deposited in a Hundi box. The orgin of this Temple is still unclear but the current Temple Complex was built by Vijayanagara King Vijayaraya Chakkaravarthi in the 18th century. This Temple is considered as the second wealthiest Temple of Tamil Nadu. Samayapuram Mariamman Temple is famous around the globe since there are Devotees from Sri Lanka, Singapore, South Africa and Fiji.
