Shri Bada Ganesh Mandhir or the Big Ganesh Temple is situated on the way to Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain. This Bada Ganesh Temple should not be confused with Shri Chintamani Ganesh Temple. This Temple is visibly seen near Gate No.4 and could be visited either before visiting Shri Mahkaleshwar Temple or after visiting it. The word Bada denotes in Hindi the size of the God who is Big or Huge. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Ganesh and He is found in a seated posture. The Idol of Sri Ganesh is 25 feet tall and 10 feet wide. Though the Idol shines as if it is made out of marble the real fact is it is made out of bricks, lime stone and sand. Its a Colossal Deity measuring 18 feet in height and 10 feet in width leading it to be one of the biggest ever Shri Ganesha Idol in the World. It is also noteworthy to mention here that the Presiding Deity of Shri Ganesh has a Clockwise Trunk or in other words His Trunk is twisted and Curves to the right side which is quite unique. A huge Laddu is seen held by the Trunk. Devotees visiting this Temple can see the Sacred Trishul or the Trident and a Swasthik Symbol on the forehead of the Presiding Deity.

It is believed that this Temple was not built with a modern cement, plaster etc. Instead the conventional jaggery,fenugreek seeds, bricks, lime etc were used. The Holy Waters from all Mokshapuris namely Mathura, Haridwar, Ayodhya, Kanchipuram, Ujjain, Kashi and Dwaraka were used for constructing this Bada Ganesh Idol. Many ornamental works were done by using Elephant Emerald, Gaushala Clay, Gemstones like Diamond, Emerald, Topaz, Pearl, Brick with Rubies and Metals like Gold, Silver, Iron and Copper. Initially Sri Bada Ganesh was left to sit in an open space for first 13 years and only in the year 1954 a permanent roof was constructed. Maharishi Guru Maharaj Siddhant Vagesh Pt. Narayan Ji Vyas established this Ganapathy Idol by doing many experiments.

It is to be mentioned here that Devotees are not allowed to come by bus, cars, auto rickshaws or other private vehicles. Instead all the vehicles are stopped at a particular point and Devotees may have to cover the entire distance by walking. A strict security vigil is maintained in this Temple and photography and videography are never encouraged. The sick and elderly can avail the services of the battery car that is available but considering the number of Devotees visiting this Temple the number of battery run cars are very few. Male Devotees can wear Pant, Shirt and Dhoti. Female Devotees are allowed to wear Sarees, Salwar Kameez with a Shawl. Since this Temple is located in the close proximity of Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple there is a steady inflow of Devotees all through the Day. Ganesh Chathurthi is celebrated here with great fanfare thereby attracting Devotees from all over India.
