Shri Koteshwar Mahadev Temple, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh

This Temple is situated in Shiv Sadhan area in Gwalior of Madhya Pradesh. It is believed to be one of the oldest existing Temples in Madhya Pradesh. The earlier version of this Temple was razed to the grounds by King Aurangazeb duing the Moghul times. Later it was Saint Dev Maharaj who recovered the Shiva Lingam and rebuilt the Temple to this level. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Shri Koteshwar Mahadev who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. The Sanctum Sanctorum has been designed in such a way that the Holy Water or Divine Water kept on top of a Divine Vessel drips down on the Shiva Lingam. It is believed that this Temple was safe guarded by several Divine Serpants that existed here in those days and it is said that it was these Serpants that made the Moghul warriors run helter skelter. Another feature of this Temple is that it has several colourful paintings depicted on the interior walls of the Temple which is so eye captivating and could keep the Devotees spell bound. Currently this Temple is being administered and maintained by Scindia Devasthan Trust. Maha Shivrathiri is celebrated here in a grand manner and during these days the Temple attracts a large number of Devotees from far flung areas too. The Temple complex is simply too huge and it can hold several thousands of Devotees on Festive Days.
