The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Lord Sivagurunathar who is none other than Lord Shiva. He is also called as Sivapuranathar, Shivapureeswarar and Brahmapurinathar. Lord Shiva Blesses His Devotees along with His Consort Singaravalli or Aaryambal or Periyanayaki. There are Sub Shrines for Lords Vinayakar, Murugan with His Consorts, Theyu Lingam, Vayu Lingam, Pruthvi Lingam, Balamurugan, Bairavar, Chandran, Suryan, Saneeswarar, Mahavishnu ,Chandikeswarar and Goddess Gajalakshmi. This Temple is one of the 275 Padal Petra Sthalam that are dedicated to Lord Shiva. This Temple 67th Siva Sthalam that is located on the Southern Banks of River Kaveri. This Temple was built by Chola Kings and has a 5 tiered Rajagopuram facing East. Shenbaga Tree is the Sthala Viruksham of this Temple. There are two Sacred Tanks named Chandra Theertham and Surya Theertham. Initially Sivapuram was also called as Kuberapuram, Bhookailayam and Sanbakaaranyam. There is a Bronze Idol of Natarajar which was stolen in 1950s and later it was restored in 1980s.
