The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Lord Shiva who is in the form of a Self Manifested Jothir Lingam. This Temple is one of the 12 Jothir Lingam Temple that is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The name Somnath is derived since soma means moon and it is believed that Lord Chandra Bhagavan prayed to Lord Shiva to get back his illumination which was lost due to some curse. This Temple was plundered and destroyed by the Mughal Rulers many times. This Temple was re-built by Nagabhatt II in the year 815 CE. In the year 1026 Mahmud Ghazni broke the Jothir Ling and looted precious jewels and also killed nearly 5000 Hindus who tried to stop him. This Temple was completly reconstructed in the year 1951 under the guidance of the then Late Home Minister of India Mr Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. This Temple is being Administered by Somnath Charitable Trust. Currently Honble Prime Minister of India Mr.Narendra Modi is the Chairman of this Trust.
