Sree Aadhi Kesava Perumal Temple is in Kalkulam Taluk where the road leads right upto the Temple. It is an East facing Temple built in a typical Kerala style of Architecture. It is one of the most important Temples in the 108 Divya Desams. Adi Kesava Perumal literally means first and foremost friend. This Temple is referred by many as the Sri Rangam of the Chera Kingdom since the Presiding Deity here is similar to the Sri Rangam Ranganathar reclining in a Aadhi Seshan. Devotees are fortunate since this Adhi Kesavaperumal Temple has been built in a picturesque ambience. This Temple is surrounded on 3 sides by River Pahrali, River Kothai and River Thamirabharani. Many scholors still consider this Temple to have been consecrated by Parasurama in those days. The Temple has colossal walls of more than 30 feet making it resemble like a fort. As of now, it is one of the most ancient Temples believed to be more than 2500 years old. Those entering the Temple first bow their heads and Pray to the Naga Devatha Idols kept beneath a huge Viruksham or a Tree. At the outset there is a 8 pillared Mandapam in the East consisting of roof top tiles. Devotees may have to climb 25 to 30 steep steps to reach the Temple. Several coloured Images of Perumal are drawn on the way leading to the Temple. There are around 224 stone pillars which are rock solid and embossed with different Idols of those days. The Temple could also be reached through the West. There is a Dwajasthambam and a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam facing the Sanctum Sanctorum. Devotees intending to reach the Moolasthanam may have to climb around 5 to 6 steps and the walls around these steps have beautiful Images of the Dasavatharam. The Presiding Deity is Sri Adhi Keshava Perumal who is an incarnation of Maha Vishnu. He is seen in a reclining posture on a 5 headed Adhi Seshan. The Presiding Deity is around 22 feet in length and He is made out of 16008 Saligrama Stones. The Presiding Deity could not be viewed fully in one glance. Instead there are three doors to view and seek the Blessings. The first door is called as "Thirumugam" where Devotees could see the face. The second door is called as "Thirukaram" where Devotees could see the Chest, Belly and Palms. The third door is a "Thirupaadam" where Devotees could view the Divine Feet of Adhi Kesava Perumal. The Darshan for the Devotees is very unique in this way since the Moolavar has to be viewed and seen through three different doors. The stone Mandapam close to the Moolasthanam made of 18 square feet and 3 feet height is made out of a single stone and looks amazing and this is called as Otraikal Mandapam. On select days of Purattasi and Panguni the Sun Rays during Sunset falls on the Presiding Deity. There are several pillared corridors and each pillar has intricately carved Idols on them. The Temple has a Shrine for Thiruvembadi Sri Krishnan who is seen East facing and in a standing posture. His Shrine has several mural paintings on its outer walls. There is a Meditation Hall or Yoga Saalai in the outer peripheral which is built of stones, wood and roof tiles. The Temple has a Madapalli or Temple Kitchen, a Well and a Nandhavanam or a Temple Garden. There is a small Sub Shrine for Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy and this is located opposite to the Adhi Kesava Perumal Temple near the River Bed. This Temple has a Shrine for Kulasekara Perumal close to its Western entrance. A narrow lane leads the Devotees to the Shrine of Kulasekara Perumal which is considered very Sacred. Panguni 10 Days Brahmmothsavam, Aippasi !0 days festival, Vaikunda Ekadesi are celebrated with great fanfare. A Sorga Vaasal is opened on Vaikunda Ekadesi days.
