The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Lord Amravaneswarar who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Lord Amravaneswarar along with His Consort Parvathy as Azhammai or Balambal Blesses His Devotees. Lord Amravaneswarar is also known as Maanthuraiappar, Mrugandeeshwarar or Aathirathnaeshwarar. The Presiding Deity is in the form of a self manifested Swayambu Lingam.The name Manthurai is derived since Lord Amravaneswarar is accompained by a bestowed Deer and a Mango Tree. King Vasvakedhu built this Temple in order to be Blessed with a Child and his Prayers were fulfilled too. Hence it is believed that those desirous of having a kid would be Blessed if they come and Pray here. This Temple was praised and sung by all 4  Saivaite Saints, because of which this Temple is considered to be one among the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalam. This Temple is also known as Vadagarai Manthurai. The inscriptions in this Temple dates back to the 11th century which clearly shows that this Temple is 1500 years old. Chola Kings worked very hard in developing this Temple to it's current structure. This Temple has a Mango Tree as Sthala Viruksham and Gayathri Nadhi as Sacred Tank or Theertham. Pradosham, Maha Shivarathri, Thiru Karthigai, Panguni Uthiram are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
