The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Lord Dharbaranyeshwara who is an incaration of Lord Shiva. He Blesses His Devotees along with His Consort Praneswari Amman. This Temple is one of the nine Navagraha Temple of South India and is also considered as Sani Dhosha Parihaara Sthalam. It is believed that the Lingam of this Temple is made out of a grass called Dharbai and hence the name Dharbaranyeshwarar. This Temple was built by Chola Kings in the 9th Century and was later developed by the rulers of Vijayanagara Empire. The Temple has a five tiered Rajagopuram and is compounded by a huge granite wall. There is a huge Sacred Tank called Nalan Theertham and Devotees are allowed to take a holy dip. There is a separate smaller Temple for Lord Vinayaka who is called as Kali Theertha Vinayagar near this Theertham. Every day thousands of Devotees visit this Temple from far flung areas. This Temple gains enormous prominence during Sani Peyarchi when lakhs of Devotees throng here. Crow is considered as a Sacred Bird and Black colour is considered to be very Sacred here.
