This Temple is also called as Thirumuruganathaswamy Temple. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Thirumuruganathar alias Sri Avudainayakar and He is an incarnation of God Shiva. His Consort here is Sri Avudainayaki or Sri Mangalambigai. Some refer Her name as Goddess Sri Muyangupoon Mulaiyammai. This is one among the 276 Devara Paadal Petra Sthalam and the 2nd Shiva Sthalam in Kongu Naadu. The Temple has no Rajagopuram and instead a Karungal Sthupam is present before the Temple as in the case of most Kongu Nadu Shiva Temples. The Temple is supposed to have been built in the 9th century. The Moolasthanam and the Temple itself is West facing. The Presiding Deity, Sri Thirumuruganathar is in the form of a self manifested Swayambhu Lingam. His Consort Avudainayaki Ambal occupies an adjacent Shrine to the Sanctum Sanctorum. It is believed that King Soorapadman tortured the Devars and imprisoned them and killed many. Fearing their lives they pleaded to God Shiva who sent Sri Murugan with His Divine Army and vanquished Soorapadman and his entire army. Since Sri Murugan had killed many in this battle He wanted to get rid of His Brammahathi Dosham and so He installed a Shiva Lingam which came to be known as Thirumuruganathaswamy. The huge Nandhi Bhagwan Idol is another attraction to this Temple. There are Sub Shrines for Bhairavar, Sooryan, Saneeswaran, Navagrahams, Pancha Lingams, Chandikeshwarar, Dhakshinamoorthy, Bhavaneeswarar, Lingothbhavar, 63 Nayanmaars etc. It is unique to see two Idols of Sundarar, one in a joyous mood and the other in a somber mood. This Temple has been visited by Sages Durvasar, Markandeyar and Agasthiyar. It is said that it was Durvasar who had brought the Sthala Viruksham from Heaven to this Temple. It is unique that the Idols of the Thirumoorthy viz. Brahmma, Vishnu and Shiva are found close to each other. The Sthala Viruksham is a Gurukathi or a Mullai Tree and there are three Theerthams or Sacred Tanks namely Brahmma Theertham, Shanmuga Theertham and Gnana Theertham. The Temple is under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India. Thai Poosam, Panguni Uthiram and Soorasamharam are celebrated and during this time there is an overwhelming number of Devotees to this Temple. This Temple gains prominence due to the fact that it is a Parihaara Sthalam for Kethu Dosham and Brammahathi Dosham.
