Eganayagar Temple is located on Pennadam Road in a place called Poonthotham which is well within Virudhachalam outskirts. The Presiding Deity of Eganayakar is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. This Deity is said to be Swayambhu and it is believed that the local villagers and cowherds found the Ega Nayaga Swayambhu Idol beneath a heap of mud close to a rivulet. This Temple was renovated and built by Agurchand Jain and family who are basically Jewellers from Virudhachalam Town. This Temple is located on the left side of the road bridging the rivulet. On entering the Temple premises through the sliding door there is a corridor with several pillars and this corridor leads us to the Sanctum Sanctorum were Lord Eka Nayagar is found as a Shiva Lingam. On the top of the corridor are a few images which are gorgeously painted. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathy are seen in the centre of it whereas Lord Ganesha and Lord Murugan are found on either side to them. The speciality of this Temple is that there is no Sub Shrine for the Consort of Shiva. Devotees could circumambulate the Sanctum Sanctorum and the entire place has several pillars. To the south of the Sanctum Sanctorum is a Sub Shrine for Sankada Sakthi Vinayagar. There is a huge Banyan Tree beneath which Idol of Naga Devathas are kept and prayed. At the rear of the Temple they are maintaining a Nandavanam. This Temple has a huge Ghoshala comprising of more than 300 Cattles. The Trustee Agurchand Jain has appointed a Veterinary Doctor to visit this Ghoshala on a daily basis and to take care of all sickly and elderly cattles. The point of surprise here is that all the milk from the Ghoshala is either gifted to the Temple for Abishekam purposes or fed to the calves in the Ghoshala itself. It must be appreciated that this milk is never sold to outsiders for any reason whatsoever. There is a huge shed close to the Temple and Ghoshala and all the fodder required for these cattle are preserved and stored there. The Ghoshala is supervised by Veerasamy who is employed here. Thirugnanam is the other person who takes care of the Security and Temple Admin matters. There are drinking water facilities and Annadhanam is provided to all Devotees and nearby villagers who come here. The Temple has a compound wall fitted with strong sliding doors.
