Many say that Ariyalur was called so because it was believed that this place was where Hari Irundha Oor and hence the name.  Sri Kothandarama Swamy or Sri Kothanda Ramar Temple is located 1 Km West of Ariyalur Bus Stand.  The handsome Bronze Statue of Lord Rama along with Goddess Seetha and Lakshmana are mounted on a pedestal and is South facing.  This Temple is believed to have been built more than 1000 years before by the Pallava Rulers and later renovated by the Cholas.   A newer Sub Shrine of Venkatesa Perumal which is East facing has come up and is now on par with the Main Sanctum Sanctorum.  However the Temple is still called as Kothanda Rama Swamy Temple.  The 6 feet tall Dasavathara Idols found on either side of the Dasavathara Mandapam was constructed by Vijaya Oppila Mazhava Raya and is a treat to watch.  The Temple has a huge compound wall and a 6 tiered Rajagopuram.  A Sub Shrine for Garuda is seen in front of the Gopuram. A dilapidated Temple Tank Kothanda Pushkarani is seen on the Southern side of the Temple.  The unwanted Vegetation grown within the Pushkarani has to be cleaned by the Temple authorities so that the Temple is well preserved for posterity.  Many of the Temple Vaahanams too are found rickety and  broken.  The Temples Chariot too has to be set right.  If the Temple is not set in order it is sure that the number of Devotees visiting here may dwindle.  The Vaikasi Brahmmotsavam and the Theepothsavam was celebrated earlier on a grand scale.
