The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Lord Aadhi Pureeswarar, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. This Temple is also known as Thyagaraja Swamy Temple. In earlier days Thiruvotriyur was called as Aadhipuri and this Temple was known as Aadhi Pureeswarar Temple. The Presiding Deity is in the form of a self formed Swayambhu Lingam. The very powerful Goddess Vadivudai Amman is in the form of Gnana Shakthi (Wisdom & Knowledge). Pallava Kings showed great interest in building this Temple. Though this Temple was built by Pallavas, King Rajendra Chola later renovated and expanded this Temple to its current structure. This Temple dates back to 7th century. The Bronze Idols of 63 Nayanmaars were installed in this Temple in 1046. Half of this Temple complex was destroyed during the Reign of Malik Kafur. The unique factor is that Lord Shiva has 2 Shrines as 1) Lord Aadhi Pureeswarar and 2) Lord Otreeswarar. The East side Rajagopuram is of 5 tiers and would have been probably built during Rajendra Chola period. The front Mandapam of the Main Shrine was built during the Chola period and it must be noted that the Main Sanctum Sanctorum and the Rajagopuram of this Temple is not in a straight line. The outer Praharam has 27 Shiva Lingams in it and it represents 27 Nakshatras on the Southern side. There is separate Shrine for Lord Ganapathy, He is called as Gunalaya Ganapathy here in this Temple. This Temple also has Sub Shrines for Lord Subramanya, Lord Dakshinamurthy, Goddesses Kali, Parvati & Vattaparai Amman. Goddess Vadivudai Amman of this Temple is also called as Tripurasundari. It is believed that Devotees entering this Temple are relieved off all their ailments. The Sacred Tank or Pushkarani here is called as Brahmma Theertham or Adisesha Theertham. This Temple draws large Devotees from far and near during Tamil Month Maasi. 15 day non stop Pooja is performed every year to honour Goddess Durga. On full moon day of Karthigai (Tamil Month) the Armour of Lord Aadhipureeswarar is removed for the Devotees to get His Powerful Blessings.
