The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Saint Pattinathar who is considered on par with God. Saint Pattinathar Blesses His Devotees in the form of a Lingam. This Temple is built on the shores of Bay of Bengal and in local parlance its known as Thiruvotriyur Beach. It is built in this place because Saint Pattinathar attained Mukthi or Moksham  here.  None knew about his plans since he was just playing with the Shepherds and Cowherds when he suddenly disappeared from their company and attained Jeeva Samadhi. All his friends and relatives cmae here to this place and worshipped. Actually Pattinathaar was born ina very affluent and rich Chettiyar family in Kaveripoompattinam or Poompuhar.  This Temple does not have a Rajagopuram or a Vimanam. Devotees visiting this Temple have to bend their neck while entering into the Sanctum Sanctorum as a mark of respect. The traditional Nagaabranam is placed on the Head of the Lingam. Saint Pattinathar is considered as an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Inside this Shrine there are 27 lamps which represents the 27 stars and these lamps are lit using only ghee. The Sanctum Sanctorum is the place where the Saint attained Jeeva Samadhi and His Mortal remains can be still found inside this Sanctum Sanctorum. There is a small Nandhi here. There are Sub Shrines for Lords Vinayaka, Muruga, Chandikeshwarar. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is Vilvam and the Bay of Bengal is considered as its Theertham.
