Bawe Wali Mata Mahakali Temple, Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir

  • Bawe Wali Mata Mahakali Temple, Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir

The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Mahakali and She is known as Bawe Wali Matha. This Temple is constructed on a raised platform. This Temple is built within the Bahu Fort on the banks of River Tawi. In ancient times this Temple was covered by dense forest but now that forest has been converted into a beautiful garden and it is named as Bagh-e-Bahu. This park gives an arial view of the entire Jammu City. This Temple is considered to be the second Kali Temple after Mata Vaishnodevi Temple.  Here the Presiding Deity is made out of a Black Stone and the entire Temple complex is built using White Marbles. The Sanctum Sanctorum is very small.  Only few people can enter it at a time. This was built by Maharaja Gulab Singh in the 8th century. In olden days animal sacrifice was performed as a respect to Goddess Mahakali but nowadays that practice has been completely stopped. It is believed that the Idol of the Presiding Deity was found many years even before this Temple complex was constructed. Navarathri si celebrated twice, once during March and April month and another during September and October month.
