This is a Hindu Temple in Kalighat dedicated to Goddess Kali. It is considered as the holiest and one among the 51 Shakti Peetas. The original Temple was built by Raja Basanta Roy, uncle of the King of Jessore in Bangladesh. The Original Temple was on the banks of River Hooghly, but the river later shifted its way. The Present Temple is around 200 years old and on the banks of Adi Ganga, a small canal. The current structure was completed in 1809 under the patronage of Sabarna Roy Chowdhury. The main attraction of the Temple is the elongated and protruding Tongue of Goddess Kali. The Sanctum Sanctorum housing the Main Deity is made of Single Dome Structure. The Tongue and Her Four Hands are fully made of Silver and Gold. The Kali image here is Unique and does not resemble the Kali Images of other Temples. There is a rectangular Altar of 3 feet high bearing a small Cactus plant. Beneath the Plant / Tree are 3 stones placed side by side and considered Very Holy. There is a Sacred Tank South East of the Temple and having a Bath here is considered Very Holy. Kali Puja, Durga Puja, Bengali New Year Day, Shankaranthi etc draw huge Devotees. There are plenty of Shops outside the Temple selling all types of Divine Articles.
