Shri Vishnupad Temple is a landmark Temple for all Vaishnaivites and it is located in Chand Chaura of Gaya in the State of Bihar. Shri Vishnupad Temple or Vishnupad Mandir is a West facing Temple where the Presiding Deiuty is obviously Shri Maha Vishnu. It has been beautifully designed and built on the banks of River Phalgu. It is believed that this was the place where traditionally Shri Maha Vishnu pinned down the Demon Gayasura and it is said that a 40 cms Divine Footprints of Shri Maha Vishnu is still retained here and it is thought that this was the Foot Print of Sri Maha Vishnu on the Chest of Demon Gayasura. This Divine Foot Print is preserved for posterity even today in a Silver Plated Basin. It is said that Shri Maha Vishnu had told Demon Gaysura at the time of his death that He would be offered his daily food through the Devotees coming here. Hence Pind Dhan is very famous in this Temple. Within this Temple is a huge Viruksh or an Immortal Banyan Tree known as Akshayavat where Divine Rituals of the deceased are taken place. This Temple is the centre of all religious rights pertaining to the Shardha of our Forefathers.

Atop this structure is the 50 Kilogram Gold Flag which was donated by an ardent Devotee named Gayapal Panda Bal Govind Sen. It is said that the Gaya Brahmins comprise of the Gayawal Thirth Purohit or the Pandas of Gaya. Several Hindu Saints namely Adhi Shankaracharya, Ramanujacharya, Madhvacharya, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Vallabhacharya and Sri Ramakrishna have visited this Shrine during their lifetime. More importantly it is believed that Sri Ram along with Goddess Seetha visited this Temple to pay their Obeisance. Many argue that the origin of this Temple is yet unknown and debatable but it was during the rule of the Queen of Indore Shri Akhilya Bhai Holkar who constructed a major portion of the Temple. This Temple attracts lakhs of Devotees all through the year since this is a Prime Temple where Shardham could be performed for the Ancestors. In this way this Temple has started attracting scores of Devotees from all over India and is one of the Prime Tourist Temple of Bihar.

Devotees visiting this Temple have a variety of Purohits and Pandas to choose from and offer Pind Dhan or Tharpan to their Forefathers as desired by them. Language is never a barrier in this Temple since the Purihits and the Pandas are well versed generally in English, Hindi and other South Indian Languages. Male Devotees are allowed to perform Pind Dhan and Tharpan with their Dhothies while the Female Devotees to wear a Saree or Salwar Kameez with a shawl.
