The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Lord Govindaraja Swamy, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Govindarajaswamy along with His Consorts Goddesses Sridevi and Bhoodevi Blesses His Devotees. Initially Lord Parthasarathy Swamy was the Presiding Deity of this Temple. Saint Ramanujacharya had a very big hand in this Temple and He Consecrated the Temple. Though this Temple was built around 1300 AD, the inner structures dates back to 9th and 10th century. The Presiding Deity facing East is in the form of a Reclining or Yoga Nithra Posture. This Temple also has Sub Shrines for Goddess Padmavathi Thaayar, Saint Ramanujar, Koorathazhwar, Chakrathalwar, Lakshmi Narayana Perumal, Anjaneya Swamy, Thirumalai Nambi and Andal at the entrance. There is a 50 meter tall seven tiered Rajagopuram which is constructed at the East entrance. Lord Parthasarathi was accompanied by His Consorts Goddesses Satyabhama and Rukmini. This Parthasarathy Perumal was actually the former Presiding Deity of this Temple before Govindaraja Swamy Perumal took over from Him. Apart from this there is a Sub Shrine for Kalyana Venkateswara Perumal who is considered as equally important. This Temple was earlier known as Sri Parthasarathi Swamy Temple till the 12th Century. The Idol of Lord Govindaraja Perumal was brought to this Temple, since the Chidambaram Temple was plundered by King Kulothunga Chola II. There are 11 Kalasam atop the Rajagopuram which dates back to 14th and 15th Century. There is a Huge Temple Tank in front of this Temple where Devotees are allowed to Take a Holy Dip. Important Poojas are performed in the huge Mandapam constructed in middle of The Temple Tank. This Temple gained popularity and came into prominence after the rule of Saluva and Vijayanagara Empire.
