This Temple is located in Dispur on the outskirts of Guwahati. Devotees may have to climb a few steps after getting down from the boat. Close to these steps there is a Welcome Arch leading to the main Temple. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Umananda Devaloi who is considered to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Umananda comprises of two words viz. Uma Wife of Lord Shiva and Ananda which implies Happiness. This Temple is located on a small Island named Umananda Island or Peacock Island in the middle of River Brahmaputra. This Island is considered to be the smallest River Island in the world. Devotees who wish to visit this Temple must cross the river using the boat facilities available here. This is a rock cut Temple which shows how splendidly the master craftsmen of those years had built this Temple. Initially the Temple complex was built by King Gadadhar Singha in the 1694 CE but it was destroyed due to a devastating earth quake in the year 1867. This Temple was again reconstructed by few rich local merchants. It is believed that the Land, Manpower and Money for constructing this Temple was provided to the Priests by the then Mughal Emperors Jahangir and Aurangazeb. Initially Aurangazeb's Moghul Army plundered this Temple but later realizing his folly He made a few contributions towards this Temple. Though being Saivate Temple the interior walls are decorated using Vaishinavite slogans. Maha Shivarathri is celebrated in a grand manner here. Visiting this Temple on a New Moon or Amavasai Day is considered to bring glory to the Devotees and would wipe away all their sins.
