Karur in ancient times was known as Karuvur. Sri Pasupatheeswarar Temple is located in Karur Town and is a landmark Temple of Karur. This Temple is considered as one of the Paadal Petra Sthalam that is dedicated to God Shiva.  Saint Thirugnanasambandar has praised this Temple very much.  This Temple is also considered as one of the seven Shiva Temples in Kongu Nadu Region.  It is believed that this Temple is around 2000 years old. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is known as Sri kalyana Pasupatheeswarar. He derived this name since the Kamadhenu is said to Meditated and Prayed to God Shiva and hence His name carries the word Pasu in it. he is also refered as Sri Aanilaiappar by few Devotees. The East Rajagopuram is around 120 feet tall and comprises of 7 Tiers. The temple also has a 100 pillared Mandapam beside few other multi pillared ones. The temple has a Stone Deepa Sthambam soon after the East facing Rajagopuram. There is a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhiya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a nandhi Vaahanam looking West towards the Moolasthanam. There is another smaller 3 Tiered East facing Rajagopuram.

There are two Dwarabaalaka Idols who stand guard before the Moolasthanam. In the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Kalyana Pasupathiswarar is seen as a Swayambu Shiva Lingam. He is also known as Sri Pasupathi Nathar. The Siva Lingam is seen slightly leaned towards a particualr direction and also has a hood mark of a Cow on it. The Swayambhu Siva Lingam is mounted on a square Avudai. He looks resplendent to the eyes of all His Devotees. The Koshtam of the Moolavar has the Idols of Sri Vinayagar, Sri Dhakshnamurthy, Sri Lingothbhavar, Sri Brahmma and Sri Durgai. The Consort of the Temple is Goddess Alangaravalli She is also called as Soundaraya Nayagi or Kribha Nayagi. The Ambal has Her own South facing Shrine from where she is seen Blessing Her Devotees in a standing posture. The Icchaa Sakthi Sub Srine is also seen here facing East.

The inner peripheral of the Temple has the Idols of the 63 Nayanmaars, Sri Vinayagr, Valli Devasena Samedha Sri Subramaniyar, Sri Eripatha Nayanar, Sri Mahalakshmi, the Pancha Lingams, Sri Natarajar, and the Navagraha Sannadhi. The Jeeva Samadhi of Sri Karuvur Thevar is also  seen in the Temple's outer peripheral.

It is widely believed that this Temple was built by the Chera Kings who ruled this region during their period. later the Chola, Pandiya and the Vijayanagara  Rulers had a hand in contributing towards the development of the Temple. This Temple is located in the heart of Karur Town and hence Devotees coming from other places too find it very easy to visit this Temple.  The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is Vanji Maram and the Holy Tank or Pushkarani of this Temple is known as Brahmma Theertham.
