The Chola Rulers are believed to have shown interest in building this Temple and it is said that King Rajendra Cholan had visited this Temple few times during his lifetime. The Vijayanagara Rulers too had a big hand in developing the Temple to its current level. Though located on a hill top the Temple premises gives a picturesque ambience with several Theerthams or Lakes all around it. The Presiding Deity of Sri Theerthagireshwarar is seen East facing in the Sanctum Sanctorum and He looks dazzling to the eyes of the onlookers and Devotees. The Presiding Deity is a Swayambhu Shiva Lingam here. His Consort Goddess Vadivambika is seen in Her Shrine Blessing the Devotees in a standing posture. It is believed that Lord Rama during His eventful lifetime had performed 2 Shiva Poojas. The earlier Shiva Pooja was peformed by Rama in Rameswaram whereas the second Shiva pooja was performed in Theerthamalai in Harur. It is said that Rama shot an arrow needing water and thus the Temple's Theertham or Pushkarani was formed. This Sacred Tank or Pushkarani is known as Rama Theertham. There is another Pushkarani too and this is known as Hanuman Theertham. The Sthala Viruksham is Pavazhamalli Tree. The Temple has exclusive Sub Shrines for Siddhi Vinayagar and Hanuman.
