Shri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir is one of the oldest and well known Jain Temple in New Delhi. This Temple is located just opposite to the Red Fort at the intersection of Netaji Subhas Marg and the Historic Chandni Chowk. This Jain temple was built in the year 1656 with the help of Mughal Emperor Shahjahan. It is believed that The Mughal Emperor Shahjahan invited many Agrawal Jains Merchants to get settled in Old Delhi and gifted to them many land on the southern side of the Chandni Chowk. A Jain Army Officer of King Shahjahan kept a Staute of Tirthankara and worshiped it by keeping it in his tent. This statue attracted many other Jain officers and subsequently that tent became the first Temple complex of Digambar Jain Lal Mandir. This Temple was initially called as Urdu Temple since this Temple was located on the streets of Urdu Bazar. Many Mughal Army Camps was established in and around the Temple because of which this Temple was also named as Lashkari Mandir in those days. This Temple has a Statue of Lord Mahavir, First Tirthankara of Jainism Rishabhanatha and the Last Tirthankara. The mordern day Temple Complex was built in this Year 1878 after the fall of the Mughal Empire. There is a world famous Bird Hospital present inside this Temple Complex which treats nearly 15000 Birds every year. There is a bookshop inside this Temple, so people visiting this Temple can buy a wide range of books that are related to Jainism. Apart from books they also sell unique souvenirs that are based on Jainism.
