Thiruvanmiyur is on the Eastern coast of Chennai and Sri Marundheeswarar Temple is almost on the beginnging of the East Coast Road or ECR as they call it. Sri Maruntheeswarar Temple is located in a busy residential locality facing East. This Temple has a huge East facing seven tiered Rajagopuram.but the Rajagopuram is partially invisible since the Temple Authorities have erected a temporary roofing before it. After the 7 tiered Rajagopuram is a beautifully painted multi coloured Corridor or Pathway whose ceiling too is gorgeously painted in different colours. To the left of this a small Pushkarani and adjoining it is the East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Kulakkarai Vnayagar. This particular area was gifted to the Temple by the late Actor Gemini Ganesan. The multi pillared corridor has several coloured paintings on its ceiling depicting Shivan and Parvathy on a Rishaba Vaahanam, Bala Murugan, Bala Ganapathy, Sri Marundeeswarar, Sri Thirupurasundari Ambal etc. Likewise Meenakshi Thirukalyanam, a Dancing Natarajar and a Kamadhenu too are painted on the ceiling. Then another five tiered East facing Rajagopuram is seen beneath which the Idols of Ganapathy and Murugan are embossed at its base. To the right is a South facing Shrine of Sri Thiripurasundari Ambal situated in a multi pillared Mandapam. The Gopuram of Ambal's Shrine has the stucco coloured Idols of Sri Thiripurasundari Ambal, Lakshmi, Saraswathi, Vinayagar and Murugan. In the Moolasthanam Sri Thiripurasundari Ambal is seen South facing and in a standing posture. There is a Simha Vaahanam close to Her Sannadhi whereas the Neivedhya Peedam is kept well outside Her Shrine. The Moolasthanam has an East facing Palliyarai and a West facing Sub Shrine of Sri Sukkaravara Amman in the Ambal's Moolasthana Mandapam. Close to the Ambal's Neivedhya Peedam is a tall four pillared Mandapam in which Divine Riruals could be conducted.
There is an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Vijaya Ganapathy and another East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Subramaniyar. There is a Moonjur Vaahanam and a Neivedhya Peedam facing the Sub Shrine of Sri Vijaya Ganapathy. Five different coloured stucco Idols of Vinayagar are seen on the top of the Gopuram of this Vijaya Ganapathy's Sub Shrine. A Vinayagar Idol is seen near the threshold of the Subramaniyar Sannadhi. There is a coloured stucco Idol of Sri Subramaniyar along with Valli and Devasena at the top of this Sub Shrine. Within the Sannadhi the Idol of Sri Subramaniyar is seen along with His Consorts. There is a Neivedhya Peedam and a Mayil Vaahanam facing His Sub Shrine. On proceeding towards the Moolasthanam there is an East facing Sub Shrine of the Urchavamoorthy and this multi pillared Mandapam is known as Sri Thiagaraja Swamy Sabha Mandapam. On top of the Gopuram there is a stucco coloured Idol of Shivan, Parvathy, Vinayagar and Murugan. There are two Idols of Sri Anjaneya Swamy and Sri Palani Andavar at the base of two pillars here. The Urchavamoorthy Idol of Sri Thiagaraja Swamy and Ambal are seen East facing. This Sannadhi can be circumambulated by the Devotees.
There is another West facing five tiered Rajagopuram at the West entrance of the ECR Road. Here there is a huge Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram and a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Nandhi Vaahanam beneath a four pillared Mandapam looking East towards the Moolasthanam. In the West facing Sanctum Sanctorum the Omnipotent Presiding Deity Sri Maruntheeswarar is seen in the form of a Swayambhu Shiva Lingam. He looks effulgent and dazzling to the eyes of the Devotees. It is believed that He is capable of curing any ailments and save Devotees who have even been let down by their Doctors. The Koshtam of the Moolavar Sannadhi consists of the following Idols Sri Durgai, Sri Brahmma, Sri Chandikeshwarar, Sri Maha Vishnu, Sri Dhakshinamoorthy adn Sri Narthana Vinayagar. In the Moolasthana Mandapam there are East facing Idols of Sri Ganapathy, Sri Naga Devathas, Naalvar, Sri Gajalakshmi, Sri Arunagirinathar, Valli and Devasena laong with Sri Subramaniyar. Likewise the Moolasthana Mandapam has North facing Idols of the 63 Naayanmaars, South facing Idols of Sri Natarajar and Sivagami Ambal, 108 Shiva Lingams and another South facing Kaala Bhairavar Idols. Apart from these the Moolasthana Mandapam has a East facing Idol of Sri Kedareeswarar, Sri Ramanatheeswarar, Sri Sundareswarar, Sri Unnamalai Amman Udanurai Sri Arunachaleeswarar and Sri Jambukeshwarar who are seen in the form of Shiva Lingams.
The Temple's outer peripheral has a North facing Sub Shrine of Sri Moondru Vinayagar. Then is the Marundeeswarar Devaasiriyan Thirumurai Mandapam in which lectures of Saiva Samayam is conducted throughout the year. The outer peripheral has East facing Naaga Devatha Idols. The outer peripheral has a Vanni Mara Medai. It is believed that God Shiva had appeared in this Vanni Maram for the sake of Sage Agasthiyar. It is also said that the Presiding Deity of this Temple who is Sri Marundishwarar was found out by Sage Valmiki from beneath this Vanni Tree. Several Naaga Devatha Idols are kept around this Vanni Maram and Prayed. Close to this Vaani Maram are several East facing Naga Devatha Idols which are revered and Prayed. The Temple has a well maintainted Ghoshala or Pasu Madam in its outer peripheral. There is a Madapalli, a Prasada Stall and a Spiritual Book Centre located within the Temple premises. The Temple has Mothers Feeding Room facilities to feed their infants. Close to the main Rajagopuram there is a place earmarked for conducting Divine functions and there is a Stage built here for this purposes. The Sthala Viruksham of the Temple is a Vanni Tree and there are two Pushkaranis for this Temple. The Pushkarani located outside the Temple is much bigger and known as Pancha Theertham. Apart from this there is another smaller Pushkarani which is found within the Temple premises. The Temple has a huge Temple Car or Chariot which is parked outside and safely secured by a tinned enclosure. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
