Besant Nagar is located on the sea front adjoining the Bay of Bengal. This Temple is located in a calm and serene residential locality. Arupadai Veedu Murugan Temple is dedicated to Sri Murugan and is one of the most special and unique Temple in Chennai City since all six prominent Abodes of Sri Murugan can be seen under a single roof. Pamban Swamigal predicted that there is going to be a construction of Arupadai Murugan Temple in this location and that his Tomb can be seen near this Temple. In the year 1984 Dr. Alagappa Alagappan came up with the idea of constructing Arupadai Veedu and so he sought the help of Kanchi Maha Periyava and conveyed his thoughts. The Sage was pleased and approved Dr. Alagappa Alagappan's idea and the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR allocated an acre of land for constructing this Temple. The Maha Kumbaabishekam of this Temple was performed in the year 2002.
This Arupadai Veedu Murugan Temple has a small North facing entrance through which Devotees are allowed to visit the Temple. The Temple actually has a four tiered East facing Rajagopuram but Devotees cannot enter this Rajagopuram since its doorway is closed and beyond it is a tall Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram. There is a precedence to visit the Arupadai Veedu. At the outset there is an East facing Shrine for Sri Maha Vallaba Ganapathy who is officially known as New York Ganapathy. This Shrine made up of multiple pillars and the Idols of Sri Bala Ganapathy, Sri Urthava Ganapathy and Sri Nirutha Ganapathy are embossed. In the Sanctum Sanctorum Sri New York Ganapathy is seen East facing and there is a Moonjur Vaahanam and Neivedhya Peedam facing the Moolasthanam.
Next is the East facing Shrine of Pazhamudhircholai Swamy. There are multiple pillars here and the Idols of Thiruparankundram, Palani, Swamimalai, Thiruchendur and Thiruttani are seen in these pillars. The opposite pillars have the Idols of Macchamuni, Agasthiyar and Lobhamuthirai, Bhogar, Pamban Swamigal, Arunagirinathar and Ramadevar. In the Sanctum Sanctorum of Pazhamudhircholai Swamy a Vel or a Divine Spear is revered and Prayed as the Presiding Deity. Facing this is a Mayil Vaahanam and a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam. The entire base of this Shrine is shaped like a Spear or Vel. Next is the North facing Shrine of Thiruparankundram in which the Presiding Deity of Sri Subramaniya Swamy is seen in a sitting posture flanked by Valli and Devasena. Facing this Shrine is a Mayil Vaahanam and a Neivedhya Peedam. Within this is another East facing Shrine of Sri Kovarthani Ambika Samedha Sri Sathyagireeswarar. Sri Kovarthani Ambika is seen South facing and in a standing posture while Sri Sathyagireeswarar is seen East facing and in the form of a Shiva Lingam. Opposite to this Shrine is a small East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Idumban and close to this is an East facing stage in which small functions could be conducted. Then there is an East facing Shrine of Thiruttani Sri Subramaniya Swamy and He is flanked by Valli and Devasena. Thiruttani Sri Subramaniya Swamy is seen holding a Spear or Vel and a Sevarkodi. The unique fact here is that there is a Yaanai Vaahanam but this Yaanai Vaahanam does not face Thiruttani Sri Subramaniya Swamy but instead it faces East. The Urchavamoorthy Idols are also seen in this Shrine.
Then there is an East facing Shrine of Swamimalai Sri Swaminatha Swamy who is seen all alone and in a standing posture. A small Vinayagar Idol is also seen within this Moolasthanam. There are two Dwara Baalakas viz Veerabagu and Veeramahendrar standing guard at His threshold. Facing the Shrine of Thiruchendur Sri Senthil Andavar is a Mayil Vaahanam and a Neivedhya Peedam. There is a South facing Sub Shrine of the Urchavamoorthy known as Sri Shanmugar. Sri Valli and Devasena Idols flank the Idol of Sri Shanmugar. The huge Dwajasthambam or Kodimaram has been placed opposite to the Shrine of Thiruchendur Sri Senthil Andavar.
