Thirukkuvalai is an important village in Nagapattinam Taluk and District. This Temple is known as Sri Brahmmapureeswarar or Sri Thiagaraja Swamy or Sri Kolili Natheswarar Temple. In Periyapuranam it has been vividly stated by Sekkizhar that Thirugnana Sammandhar had visited the Temple in Thirukkuvalai while on his way to Thiruveezhimizhalai. THe Presiding Deity is called as Sri Brahmmapureeswarar or Sri Kolili Natheshwarar or Sri Kolilinathar. The Consort is known as Sri Vandamar Poonguzhali Ambal. This Temple is considered as the 240th Thevara Paadal Petra Sthalam. Devotees consider this Temple very sacred since it is believed that Sage Agasthiyar had come to this with his retinue of Disciples.

This is an East facing Temple with a five tiered Rajagopuram. There is a tall Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Nandhi Vaahanam looking West towards the Moolasthanam. There is a small Gopuram or Arch before the Moolasthanam in which various coloured stucco Idols of Gods and Goddesses could be seen. In the Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Brahmmapureeswarar alias Sri Kolilinathar is seen in the form of a Swayambhu Shiva Lingam made out of Sand. He is revered and is considered as an incarnation of God Shiva. The Koshtam around the Moolasthanam has various Idols of Narthana Ganapathy, Dhakshinamoorthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahmma and Durgai. The Ambal is known as Sri Vandam Poonguzhali and She has an East facing Shrine and seen in a standing posture. Within the Ambal's Shrine is a Divine Well known as Sakthi Theertham and the Water fetched from here is used for all Divine purposes.

The Prahaaram or Corridor of the Temple has Sub Shrines of Sri Sundarar and his Consort Paravai, Thiaga Vinayagar, Viswanathar, Visalakshi, Indra Pureeswarar, Chokkalingam, Annamalaiyar, Mahalakshmi, Arthanareeswarar, Uma Maheswarar, Natarajar, Pichadanar and Naalvar. The Navagrahams are seen shoulder to shoulder in a single row facing South. The Navagrahams stand shoulder to shoulder so that they could ward off the evil messangers of Yaman or Yamadhoodhargal. The Temple also has a Shrine of Sri Thiagarajar. This Thiagarajar is considered second to the Sri Thiagarajar of Thiruvarur. This is the only Sri Thiagarajar Temple in India which has a Silver Throne of its own. The Temple has a Sub Shrine for Sri Yogeshwarar who was much revered and Prayed by the great Shiva Bakthan Supriyan. There is a general belief that Devotees who come here to seek His Blessings would be rid of all their physical ailments.

Historically it is construed as a Maada Kovil built by King Ko Chenget Cholan. After the Cholas the Pandyas, Vijayanagara Rulers and Madurai Naayaks evinced keen interest on this Temple and developed it to this level. According to the Histroical inscriptions it is revealed that the Presiding Deity was known as Sri Thirukolili Udaya Naayanar and the Sri Thiagarajar here is known as Sri Avani Vidanga Thiagar. It is also learnt that during the early Chola Period the Temple had Anaya Vilakku or Perpetual Lamps lit from original Ulakku Ennai or Ulakku Oil. The Temple gains prominence since Bheeman was afflicted with Brahmmahathi Dosham after killing Bagasuran. Hence it is said that Beeman sought refuge here and Prayed to Sri Brahmma Pureeshwarar. This Temple is known as Saptha Vidanga Sthalam since the Maragatha Lingam is believed to have been brought here from an East Asian Country by King Rajendra Chola. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is Thetha  Maram whereas the Pushkarani or Sacred Tank is known as 10 Brahmma Theertham, 2) Indra Theertham and 3) Agasthiya Theertham. Special Poojas are conducted on Vinayaga Chathurthi, Purattasi Navarathri, Aipasi Annabhishekam, Thirukarthikai, Thaipoosam, Thiruvathirai and Masi Maham are some of the festivals that are celebrated in a grand manner. This Temple is considered as Navagraha Dosha Nivarthi Sthalam.
