Sri Kala Bhairavar or Sri Bairavanathar Temple, Thagattur, Nagapattinam District, Tamil Nadu

  • Sri Kala Bhairavar or Sri Bairavanathar Temple, Thagattur, Nagapattinam District, Tamil Nadu

Thagatoor is a Hamlet in Vedaranyam Taluk of Nagapattinam District. It is one of the rarest Temples to have the Presiding Deity of Sri Kaala Bhairavar or Sri Bhairavanathar gracing from the Moolasthanam. In ancient times Thagatur was known as Yendirapuri. This Temple is considered as a Thevara Vaipu Sthalam since it has been mentioned in the Hymns. In the Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Bhairavar is seen. He is considered on par with God Shiva. This Temple has a Panchatchara Yanthiram installed in the Maha Mandapam of the Temple. The Urchavamoorthy Idol who is known as Sri Sattainathar is taken around in procession on festive occasions. There is a Sub Shrine behind the Moolasthanam in which Sri Sivaloganathar is seen along with Sri Sivagama Sundari Ambal. Likewise the Temple has a Shrine for Sri Kasi Viswanathar and Sri Visalakshi Ambal. There are Sub Shrines for Ganapathy, Valli Devasena Samedha Subramaniyar, Durgai and Chandikeshwarar. A Pushkarani or Temple Tank is found close to the Temple in which the Deity of Sri Rowther along with Goddessess Karupayee and Kathayee are seen. These Idols are revered and are considered as Village Gaurdian Deities. The Sthala Viruksham of the is a Naaval Maram.

The History behind the Temple is Sri Rama wanted to cleanse Himself off the Brahmmahathi Dosham in Rameswaram. He then sent Sri Anjaneya Swamy to Kasi to fetch Him a Shiva Lingam. When Sri Anjaneya Swamy started from Kasi along with the Shiva Lingam the Kala Bhairavar too followed Him. On the way to Rameswaram Anjaneya Swamy wanted to rest in Thagatoor. When Anjaneya Swamy started again for Rameswaram Kala Bhairavar humbly requested that He would stay back permanently in Thagatoor itself. Chithra Pournami, Bhairavashtami are conducted with great fanfare.
