The exact location of the Temple is in Melakottaivasal in Nagore. The place Nagore or Nagoor as it is spelt is a sensitive and an important in Nagapattinam District. The Presiding Deity is known as Sri Naganatha Swami or Sri Naganathar. The Temple is located on Karaikal to Nagapattinam Main Road. This is an East facing Temple with a multi coloured five tiered Rajagopuram. The Temple comprises of two Prahaarams, the inner peripheral and outer peripheral. The frontal Gopuram consists of the Idols of Sri Gajasamharamurthy, Sri Bikshadanar, Sri Ekapaadamurthy, Sri Kanagavisarajamoorthy and Sri Sarabeshwarar. 

The Temple has a tall Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Nandhi Vaahanam facing West towards the Moolasthanam. In the Sanctum Sanctorum Sri Naganatha Swamy is seen as a Swayambhu Shiva Lingam. The rear of the Sanctum Sanctorum has been built in the Gajabrustam style resembling the rear of an Elephant. It is believed that this Sri Naganatha Swami came from nowhere from beneath a Punnaga Maram and gave Darshan to Sri Maha Vishnu. His Consort here is known as Sri Nagavalli Ambal and She is seen in Her Shrine. There are Sub Shrines for Sri Nayanaar, Sri Natarajar, Sri Ayyappa Swamy, Sri Juraheshwarar, Sri Valampuri Vinayagar, Sri Dhakshinamoorthy, Sri Dhattapureshwarar, Sri Mahalakshmi, Sri Brahmma, Sri Durga Devi, Sri Kasi Viswanathar, Sri Narthana Vinayagar and Sri Saneeswarar. There is a Sub Shrine in which Sri Raahu is seen along with His Consorts Sri Nagavalli and Sri Naga Kannika. The Sthala Viruksham is Punnaga Maram and the Sacred Tank or Pushkarani is known as Chandra Theertham. The Temple staff have to be appreciated for maintaining a very good lush green Nandhavanam close to the Chandra Theertham. This Temple gains prominence since it is believed that Sri Indran, Sri Chandran, Sri Brahmma, Sage Dhurvasa and Maha Vishnu had come here to seek the Blessings of Sri Naganatha Swamy. 

The History behind the Temple is that a Brahmin's son was playing in a forest area and he accidentally saw the Serpant King Nagaraja uniting with His wife. The Serpant King noticed this and grew furious and bit the Brahmin's Son. Soon the boy died of the deadly Snake venom. The Brahmin came to know of this through his Divine Power and cursed the Snake King that he would roaming in the Earth without any Powers, Knowledge and would also lose his position. The Snake King begged for pordon to which the Brahmin relented and adviced Him to Pray to Sri Naganatha Swamy here and seek His Blessings after which He would gain back all His lost Powers Knowledge and Position. Pradosham, Maha Shivarathri, Thiru Karthigai and the Nithya Arthajaama Pooja are done in a grand manner.

This place is considered as a Pithru Dosha Nivarthi Sthalam equivalent to that of Gaya Shardham. It is also construed as the apt place for Naaga Dosham and Raahu Dosha Nivarthi Sthalam.
