The Presiding Deity is Dhandayuthapani Swami who is affectionately called as Sri Murugan. Sri Karthikeya is a fond son of God Shiva and He has a lareg number of Devotees in Tamil Nadu. This hill top Temple is one of the 6 prominent Abodes of Sri Murugan The Main Deity is made of Nava Pashanam. Devotees seeking Blessings of Sri Palani Murugan have to climb 693 steps to reach the Sanctum Sanctorum. This Temple also has a winch and rope car facility for Devotees to reach the Hill for which i small fee is levied per head.
The Main Temple is located 1500 feet above Mean Sea Level. This Temple has a Gold Plated Gopuram. There is a traditional Bronze Bell at the entrance. The Temple draws a lot of visitors from the adjoining Kerala too. Devotees undertake Kaavadi to fulfill their wishes. The Oblation Water or Abisheka Theertham is believed to have Medicinal Effect. Palani Panchamirtham is the name of the Prasadam given out at this Temple. Panjamirdham means a mixture of five things and it can be eaten as a sweet Prasadham. This Temple belongs to the 9th century. Cheran King Cheraman Peruman worked hard in constructing this Temple. The Temple resembles to that of the Cheras & Pandyas. The Temple Idol is unique since its made of nine poisonous herbs or Nava Pashanam.
There is a statue of Sri Murugan holding his staff and dressed like an ascetic who has given up or renounced the world and all of its joys. This figure is standing on a stone base. On the walls of the Temple are many words written in old Tamil script. On top of the Temple is a golden tower called a Gopuram, which has several coloured statues of Sri Murugan and other Gods. Sri Ganesha is seen s eated in a Sub Shrine at the door of the Temple, and people Pray to him before seeing Sri Murugan. God Shiva and Goddess Parvathi also have their own Sub Shrines here. This Temple is one of the richest Temples in Tamil Nadu with its earnings one time touching 33 Crore in year way back in 2013. Thai Poosam, Vaikaasi Visakam are celebrated here in a grand manner with several lakhs of Devotees partaking in it at that time.
